Dr Amit Chawla

Dr. Amit Chawla is a distinguished consultant cardiothoracic and vascular anaesthetist, currently serving at St Thomas's Hospital in London since 2006. He was trained at St Thomas's Hospital and prestigious Ann Arbour Cardiac Institute at University of Michigan Hospital, USA.

 

He is renowned for his expertise in managing patients for complex cardiac surgical procedures, with a special focus on aortic arch and thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery, major vascular surgery, all types of minimally access cardiac surgeries and transcatheter valvular heart interventions. Dr. Chawla is especially skilled in treating patients with complex cardio-respiratory issues and other systemic co-morbidities who are considered high-risk for anesthesia or surgery. A significant area of his specialization includes difficult airway management in cardiac surgical patients and spinal cord protection during thoracoabdominal aorta procedures. He possesses extensive experience in anaesthetising patients for total thoracoabdominal aortic replacements, a testament to his capabilities in handling one of the most invasive and challenging operations in the medical field. Dr. Chawla's interests also extend to the 'fasttrack' management of cardiac surgical patients, anaesthesia for minimally invasive cardiac surgery, and transoesophageal echocardiography. Dr Chawla has pioneered a novel technique of transvenous pacing in one of the largest series to facilitate minimally invasive valvular operations.

 

Having completed his medical education and specialist training in anaesthesiology in India, followed by further qualifications from the Royal College of Anaesthetists, London. Dr. Chawla holds memberships in prominent associations, has contributed to numerous publications, and has been actively involved in research and presentations at international forums.

 

In addition to his clinical and academic pursuits, Dr. Chawla is passionate about teaching and has served as a proctor and educator in various capacities. Dr Chawla has been a proctor for Edwards LifeSciences for TAVI & minimal access cardiac surgery and has helped to establish a thoracoabdominal programme in other centres in UK.
